Class Picnic

As a follow up to our concert song we had planned to pack up our picnic hampers and have a feast at the beach.Unfortunately the weather was a bit unsettled so we had the picnic in the hall foyer. It was great. The food in little bags was fun and the delicious food on the table was a real treat. We even had a surprise visitor - our very own Father Christmas. Many thanks to the parents for everything they contributed.

Athletics Day

For a change we had a perfect day for the Junior Team's Athletics Day.
Here are some comments from the Room 5 athletes.
"I felt like I was running as fast as a cheetah".
"When I lined up for my race my legs were shaking because I was really nervous".
"I was concentrating really hard when I was holding the egg and spoon".
"I was really puffed at the end of the distance race".
"It was so good that my Mum, Dad and Grandma could be there to watch".
"It was exiting to be in the Year 2 Distance final in front of all the parents".
"I did the best I could on the day and was very proud of myself".

A special thanks to Jemma for taking photos for us on the day, she did a fabulous job.

BMX Potential Champion

Thanks Noah for showing us all the special gear you need to wear when you compete in BMX races. It is obvious that you need a lot of skills to be competitive in these races. Even though you are a beginner at this sport you know a lot about it and have a great deal of talent. The bike is pretty awesome too. Best of luck for your future races.

Still Life Drawing Lesson

Bianca visited us yesterday and took us for a still life drawing lesson. We learned about colour mixing, brush techniques and how to build up a painting. We will be able to use these new skills next time we do painting by ourselves.

Visit to Sumner Fire Station

As part of our Inquiry Unit Rooms 5 and 6 visited the Sumner Fire Station this morning. We have been looking around our community and are amazed at the number of organisations we have that rely on volunteers to provide the service that they offer. The Fire Station is a very good example of this. Thanks to Mark and Dan for giving up time out of their paid jobs to come and talk to us about the Sumner Brigade. We had a good look at what is inside the fire engine and got to hear about different things the firefighters do as part of their job. You do a great job and we very much appreciate it.

Science Fair

This term the whole school has studied flight as their inquiry unit. The way we shared our work was to hold an open night throughout the whole school for parents and friends to come through and see what the children have been working on. Room 5 had some great individual projects to display as well as lots of art and writing they had done around the theme of flight.

Lesson on the court

A reading group in Room 5 found a good way of combining a reading book about birds with our maths strand which is measurement. With some support they used metre rulers to show the wing span and height of the Great Flamingo and the Lesser Flamingo. Then they shared facts about these birds with rest of the class. We found out that only a couple of the children were taller than the Greater Flamingo.

The Fun Bus

It was Room 5's turn to share an item in the Junior Team's assembly this week. We chose to act out the big book we have been reading in class called "The Fun Bus". We have had a lot of fun acting it out in class this week. The children who performed in the assembly did a great job.

Discovery Day on Wheels

Everyone looks forward to Discovery on Friday morning. This week we focused on the resilience SURFER Value and added wheels to our choice of activities. You can see from the photos everyone had a great time zooming around our courts.

Cricket lesson

Thank you Canterbury Cricket for the lesson today. There are some very talented cricketers in Room 5.

Photos from our day at the beach flying kites

Flying Our Kites

What a perfect day to go down to the beach and fly the kites we made at school. The sun was shining and there was just the right amount of wind.
It was tricky for some of the children to get them up in the air at first but everyone managed eventually. The kites looked magnificent with the bold, colourful designs as they twisted and turned high up against a backdrop of a vivid blue sky. It was a great day and we were very grateful to the parents who came down with us as there were a few running repairs we had to do.

Science lesson with Julie

We were lucky this week to have a science lesson with Julie about air. We did experiments and learned about air. What happens to the air particles when air is heated and cooled.
